Get up and exercise and
GO OUTSIDE

After a Canadian winter spent indoors, spring provides a great opportunity to move your workouts outside.

Outdoor classes: These days even your local yoga studio is offering an outdoor yoga class (weather permitting of course). If yoga isn’t your thing, take a page from the Chinese elders in your neighbourhood and try Tai Chi. Outdoor bootcamp is a good option for people who want to drop a few pounds before going bathing suit shopping.

Hiking: Tourists come from all over the world to experience Canada’s great outdoors. Lucky for you, you don’t have far to go. Put on your hiking shoes and go. Just make sure you tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

Join a sports team: Springtime is ripe with sports teams. Volleyball, ultimate, soccer, baseball and softball are all team activities that get you out exercising in a group. Most of us have all played one of these games growing up, at least in gym class, so we know the rules. As long as you smile and have a good time, no one will mind if you’re a bit rusty.

Try your hand at tennis or golf: Golf and tennis both provide excellent opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and socialize at the same time, but unlike yoga or hiking, they do require a more advanced skill set. Luckily, there are more than a few expert tennis and golf players who would be happy to act as your instructor. Go fishing: Canada’s great outdoors also boast one or two lakes, and fly fishing is actually very good exercise.

Find a park near you with an outdoor fitness circuit: What is old is new again: Outdoor fitness circuits include a variety of exercise equipment, and many even include instructions posted to nearby boards or signs. It’s an easy way to add a kick to your morning walk with the dog (or stroller).

Enroll in a running or walking clinic: The time for marathons and charity or community runs is now. There are running or walking clinics that appeal to every activity level.

Gardening: This is the one activity where it’s okay to eat and work out at the same time. There’s nothing better than toiling the soil while munching on a few strawberries you’ve grown yourself at the same time.

So get outside and get active, but don’t forget:
  • Wear your sunscreen
  • Wear light coloured and lightweight protective clothing to avoid those pesky mosquito bites
  • Wear a hat
  • If you’re going for an outdoor adventure, tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back
  • Take adequate supplies with you (e.g., water, first aid kit, cell phone, snacks, extra sunscreen etc.)
  • Update your gear when necessary (e.g., runners) to avoid unwanted injuries
