10 Tips to a Healthier Holiday

The holiday season is approaching fast, along with all the tempting treats at the office. Eggnog lattes and festive get-togethers—full of fat and rich in calories. FOOD! It’s all around us—there’s no escaping it. And the plummeting temperatures make us want to eat more.

Use these 10 tips to help you get through the holidays.
  1. Start the day with a healthy, filling breakfast like oats so you don’t feel like snacking on treats.
  2. Plan your week. Look at the number of events you’ll be attending and plan your exercise days around them. If you schedule time in your calendar for exercise, you will be more inclined to stick to it. Don’t forget to schedule in some ‘me’ time to relax.
  3. Don’t skip meals or starve yourself if you know you’re going to a party later in the day. You will only overeat when you get there.
  4. Learn how to say “no” to second helpings, or even to too many events.
  5. Get outside during the sunny part of the day to get some sunlight and fresh air. The dark days can make us feel depressed and cause us to eat more. Some people feel the effects of the winter and light deprivation more than others. This is called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).
  6. Plan family get-togethers around activities rather than meals. Go for a walk or try snowshoeing, ice skating or cross-country skiing. Walk to do your errands or Christmas shopping.
  7. Drink plenty of water and if you want something warm, try a herbal tea. Drinking caffeinated drinks or sugary pop will lead to dehydration and weight gain. A hydrated body increases your immune system and keeps your energy up.
  8. Have healthy snacks at hand so that you don’t eat the sugary treats. If you crave something sweet, have a piece of fruit or dark chocolate instead.
  9. Fill up on high fibre, low calorie raw veggies or broth soups.
  10. Get to bed a little early to recharge the body.
Enjoy the festive season and have a little of what you fancy!
